The Civic Maritime Museum, with its extensive collection, is one of the most significant museums in Italy and the Mediterranean region. It boasts a collection of models of ships that have contributed to the history of navigation: from boats dug off tree trunks, Roman triremes, Venetian galleys, Christopher Columbus’s caravels, galleons, sailing ships, brigantines, and frigates, to the vessels of Trieste’s Navy dating back to the 1800s, Lloyd Triestino steamers, hospital ships, and sailing yachts. These collections provide a comprehensive overview of the maritime history of Trieste and the Adriatic, including the evolution of marine technology, navigation techniques, fishing, and other economic activities related to the sea. A notable feature of the museum is its display of scientific instruments used in navigation and the study of ocean physics. One unique exhibit is a collection of mid-nineteenth century models depicting the depths of the seabed in colored layers, designed by Heinrich von Littrow. Another highlight is the dedicated to Joseph Ressel, who developed the first screw propeller while working in Trieste during the time when the Adriatic was mostly under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The museum complex, located in Warehouse 26 at the Old Port, also includes a section dedicated to Lloyd, one of the most prominent shipping companies of the past. This section features over 1000 exhibits, including models, publications, paintings, porcelains, silver, graphics, photographs, objects, nautical instruments, watches, weapons, maps, and documents, providing a comprehensive account of the company’s history.
